In its on going efforts to bring the power of FOSS based technologies to the mountainous asian nation of Nepal, the Madan Puraskar Pustakalaya has released a localised version of the Open CD.

Localized Free and Open Source Software, Nepali Open CD 1.0

Madan Puraskar Pustakalaya (MPP) has released the Nepali OpenCD 1.0 in January 9, 2007. The Nepali OpenCD 1.0 is a compilation of free and open source software localized into Nepali and runnable in the Windows operating system and developed by Madan Puraskar Pustakalaya. After the release of two different versions of NepaLinux, a localized Linux Distribution in Nepali, the development of the Nepali OpenCD 1.0 is yet another attempt of Madan Puraskar Pustakalaya for promoting the usage of localized Free and Open Source Software in the region. With the existing old legacies of the Windows operating system deeply rooted in the masses, the localized OpenCD is believed to be a motivating factor for switching to the Free and Open Source Software. The translation and localization of the software has been supported by the International Development and Research Centre, Canada under the PAN Localization Project.

Contents of the Nepali OpenCD

The localized Nepali OpenCD consists of the following software:
1.OpenOffice.org Suite (Office applications like Writer,Calc,Impress,Base etc.);
2.SeaMonkey Browser and Mail client (Browser and mail client);
3.Gimp (Image Manipulation Software);
4.FileZilla - 3(FTP Client Program for uploading and downloading files);
5.VLC Media Player (Software for playing audio video files);
6.Nepali Unicode Keyboard driver (Input System for Nepali).

Pre-requisites for running the software included in the OpenCD after installation

In order to run the software included in the OpenCD after installation, the Nepali Unicode Keyboard driver, also included in the OpenCD has to be installed first in the computer.

Both the Open CD and its sister project Nepalinux can be found at nepalinux.org

Turbo-charge Mozilla Firefox !

Here's something for broadband people that will really speed Firefox up:

  1. Type "about:config" into the address bar and hit return. Scroll down and look for the following entries:
    network.http.pipelining
    network.http.proxy.pipelining
    network.http.pipelining.maxrequests

    Normally the browser will make one request to a web page at a time. When you enable pipelining it will make several at once, which really speeds up page loading.

  2. Alter the entries as follows:
    Set "network.http.pipelining" to "true"
    Set "network.http.proxy.pipelining" to "true"

Nepali Meta Search Engine : www.metalnepal.com

Quoting the site : ..."metanepal.com is Nepal's first metasearch engine. metanepal uses innovative metasearch technology to search the Internet's top search engines, including Google, msn, kanoodle and nepal specific search engines such as explorenepal.com"

Also by the way they also provide a "News Search" feature. Even though this search engine parses the results of different search engines, it still is a valuable tool for web searchers looking esp. at Nepali sites.

Google Entices Job Searchers...

Mysterious banners at a Cambridge, Mass., subway stop have commuters scratching their heads. The signs, challenging passers-by to solve a complicated math problem, are actually a cryptic pitch by Google, which is looking to hire more brainy engineers.

The message at Harvard Square also appears on a billboard in California's Silicon Valley, but Google's name is nowhere to be found on the ads. It simply states:

{first 10-digit prime found in consecutive digits of e}.com

In case you're wondering -- or forgot -- e is the base of the natural system of logarithms, having a numerical value of about 2.71828 (though the number goes on forever).

Knock Knock Knocking on Heavens Port !!

Port knocking is a method of establishing a connection to a networked computer that has no open ports.

Before a connection is established, ports are opened using a port knock sequence, which is a series of connection attempts to closed ports. A remote host generates and sends an authentic knock sequence in order to manipulate the server's firewall rules to open one or more specific ports. These manipulations are mediated by a port knock daemon, running on the server, which monitors the firewall log file for connection attempts which can be translated into authentic knock sequences.

Once the desired ports are opened, the remote host can establish a connection and begin a session. Another knock sequence may used to trigger the closing of the port.

Read more about it at PortKnocking.org and give it a whirl.

Motorola SB5100, Cable Broadband Modem Access

I was having difficulty connecting to the broadband cable modem through ethernet using the Motorola SB5100 and switching between desktops. Here is what I found for troubleshooting the connection:

  1. Put the cable modem in stand-by mode
  2. This will enable the internal DHCP Server of the modem when the Cable Modem is disconnected from the Internet. You will then be assigned a dynamically assigned IP Addresses by the Cable Modem DHCP Server which keeps trying to refresh after 10 seconds. These addresses are assigned from an address pool which begins with 192.168.100.11 and ends with 192.168.100.42.
  3. Bring up the SURFboard Configuration Manager located at http://192.168.100.1
  4. Go to the "Configuration" page and "Restart Cable Modem".
  5. Turn on the Modem from it's Stand-by mode.
  6. The cable modem should now pick up your latest MAC Address and you will be assigned the IP address provided by your ISP in the next refresh.

Happy Surfing !!
